Our Nation and especially the people of Southwest Texas experienced the second deadliest K-12 shooting in history. Nineteen children and 2 adults were killed on the next to last day of school at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.
60% of the kids and families directly impacted by this shooting live under the poverty level. Pastor Steve has been in contact with United Methodist leaders in the area and a committed fund has been set up through our finance office to offer assistance for payment of funeral expenses. If you’d like to donate, please make checks out to Epworth UMC with “Texas” in the memo line and send to the finance office via mail, place in the offering plate on Sundays, or drop off during business hours.
To launch this fund, Epworth UMC is committing $2,500 to help with the most crucial need at the moment which is funeral expenses and related end of life costs for these young lives that were tragically ended. In addition to United Methodist leaders in the area, Pastor Steve has spoken with funeral homes. The average cost of a child’s funeral is between $5,000-$7,000. The City of Uvalde is committing some amount of funds to help as well. Any further giving will help more families in crisis.
If you'd like to send a care letter offering prayers or condolences to those Texas families, please place written note cards in Jennie Vancil’s mail slot near the church offices inside the Central Ave doors, or mail to Epworth UMC Attn: Jennie Vancil, 4855 W. Central Ave., Toledo, OH 43615.
Our sermon last Sunday “The Essential Character of a Believer” speaks specifically to this issue. This may be useful too as a spiritual resource for this challenging time. The message can be accessed at epworth.com/sermons or via Epworth’s facebook page.
