What are the Ten Commandments and why are they important?   Harper, Marblehead, Ohio

Hi Harper.  Thank you for this interesting question. The Ten Commandments also known as the Decalogue are a set of specific principles for living that play an important role in Christianity and Judaism.  According to the Bible these commandments were revealed to Moses on Mt. Sinai.

The Ten Commandments are listed in the Bible in two locations in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. These rules assert the uniqueness of God and forbid such things as theft, murder and adultery, among other things.

The first three of the Ten Commandments are focused on how human beings relate to God. The next four relate to how human beings treat each other and the last three have to do with personal conduct in daily living.

Many people think that Christianity is nothing but a list of rules that are enforced by some elderly white haired being up above.... like a cosmic Santa Claus checking off who is naughty and nice.

The truth is that these commandments are meant to help guide our living  so we might make the most of each day.  I like the way my mentor Dr. Robert Schuller put it in his groundbreaking book on this subject “Believe in the God Who Believes in You.”  In this volume he makes each commandment a positive statement of faith in action.  The result of following these commandments help us accentuate our faith and achieve more fulfillment and true happiness in life. Dr. Schuller states  “What you are going to be is a decision you make. Believe in God, Believe in yourself and accept the positive faith building challenge of the Ten Commandments to achieve the impossible.”

When we stop looking at faith as a bunch of rules to obey but rather as a roadmap to healthy and meaningful living we unlock the key to truly understanding what it means to be a dynamic Christian.
