Hello Patrick.  This is an interesting and quite involved question.  Much more so than it might initially appear on the surface.

The name of God as revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures is Yahweh, or in Hebrew YHWH, as ancient Hebrew did not have vowels. Throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, God inspired the human authors of Scripture to refer to Him using terms such as Lord, Savior, God and Friend.

We sing a song at Epworth UMC with the words, “I am a friend of God,” underscoring God’s Name and our relationship with Him. Other Names for God in the Bible are used as descriptors of God and His various roles such as the following:

1) EL ELOAH...God mighty and strong

2) ELOHIM...God our Creator

3) El SHADDAI... God Amighty

4) ADONAI...Lord used in place of Yahweh

5) YAHWEH JIREH...The Lord provides

6) YAHWEH SHALOM...The Lord of Peace

8) YAHWEH SHAMMAH...The Lord is there

These are just a few examples of the many names of God.  I think the best name is simply Friend. Jesus affirmed in the New Testament Book of John; “I no longer call you servants but friends.” Become a fiend of God today and invite Him to lead you forward into a great adventure in Believing.
