Dr. Swisher, What can we do about the recent dramatic rise in crime in our City?   Oliver, Toledo

Hello Oliver.  This is a timely and crucial question as recently WTOL Channel 11 reported that the rate of homicides in Toledo have  more than doubled from last years number.   I know you would agree that even one life lost is too many, so the alarming increase in crime needs to be addressed.

Here are a few tips for curbing and eventually overcoming this issue:

  1. Be alert at all times.   Be aware of your surroundings and be watchful
  2. Become focused on the solutions to violence which include education, increased mental health services and more oversight of gun sales.
  3. Demand elected official grasp, understand and then take proactive steps to reduce the current trend. If they refuse, help elect a different public servant.
  4. Form or join your neighborhood watch association and keep an eye out for those on your street, building or neighborhood.
  5. Pray for our community, the Police, and all of those who are trapped in the cycle of violence but desperately want to escape to a better life.

The Bible reminds us “Blessed are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times” Psalm 106:3.

You and I have the opportunity to make a real significant difference for our family, friends and fellow Toledoans as we get involved and become a positive influence in the world around us.

One way to do that in a concrete way is to participate in our Mayoral Candidate Forum on September 11 at 3:30pm in the Family Life Center of Epworth UMC.  All 3 Mayoral candidates have been invited.  Join us as together we continue to strive for peace and harmony for all.
