Dr. Swisher, Is it important to have a Christian mentor? Tyler, Toledo
Thanks for writing us with this question, Tyler. A lot of business professionals and self-help motivational speakers such as Tony Robbins and John Maxwell often speak about the importance of mentoring.
Several of the para-Church organizations of which I’m aware such as Campus Crusade for Christ, the Navigators and even Young Life also foster this idea as well.
As in any area or genre in life it is helpful to have a trusted friend and mentor to help guide and make sense of both the exciting and challenging experiences we face. Also sometimes an outside source with a fresh or new perspective helps us as well.
The Bible verse that immediately came to mind after reading your question is found in the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes 4:12; “A person standing alone can be attacked and overpowered, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a three fold cord is not easily broken.”
When we have a mentor, a friend, an experienced guide through life we are empowered to be even more than we imagined.
One of my mentors Dr. Will Willimon is our guest this weekend in Church. Dr. Willimon is a retired Bishop and prolific writer and World renound preacher. He has been a friend and mentor of mine for over 15 years.
I invite you to join us at Epworth UMC today at 8:30, 9:45 and 11am and find hope for daily living.
