Dr. Swisher, I have several questions about Lent and Holy Week can you help? Sophia, Sylvania
Hi Sophia. Absolutely I am more than happy to help with your questions. I’ve answered them in the order you sent.
- What is Lent? Lent literally means Spring. It represents the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert after His baptism and before the official launch of His three year ministry.
- How long does Lent last? The duration of Lent is 40 days, not including Sundays, as they have been seen throughout Church history as mini-Easters. So technically it is 46 days.
- What is supposed to happen during Lent? This question really depends on you Sophia and what you want to happen in your life. Typically Lent is a time to reflect and focus your life on Jesus in a way that will strengthen your Faith.
- What is Holy Week? Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday representing Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and culminates with Easter Sunday’s proclamation of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead. Days in between those bookends of celebration include Maundy Thursday, when Jesus and the Disciples gathered in the Upper Room. As well as Good Friday which commemorates Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross.
I hope these answers have helped bring some clarity to this Sacred time of year, Sophia. May God bless you and those you love.
