Dr. Swisher, How can I know the Voice of God? Patricia, Lima, Ohio
Hello Patricia. Thanks for writing into our column with this interesting question. Throughout the Bible we discover people who asked this question. Samuel heard the voice of God but did not recognize it until he was helped by Eli (1 Samuel 3: 1-10). Gideon had a physical revelation from God and he still doubted what he had heard to the point of asking for a sign, not once but three times (Judges 6: 17-22, 36-40).
How can we know God’s voice? We have something that Gideon and Samuel didn’t. We have the complete Bible, the inspired Word of God to read, study and meditate on. We hear His voice when we spend time in Bible study and quiet contemplation on His Word.
Sometimes we hear God through the leading of the Holy Spirit. Through our consciences or the still small voice within, our circumstances and through our personal experiences we may hear the voice of God.
Lastly to hear God’s voice we must belong to Him. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they know me” (John 10:27). Those who hear God’s voice are a part of His family and have been saved by His Grace. They have committed their lives to Him and firmly belong to the Kingdom of Light.
